If your goal is to shoot ELR, or max 2000 yards, do you really need a high dollar spotting scope? $2-3k +

I understand the use in hunting and needing to see animals in detail on a mountain through vegetation or in low light that a high end scope can give you the clarity you need in most conditions. But for just shooting a steel target really far away, can you get away with a mid range spotter?
